French Plan of the Bombay Fort

1758

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum
Mumbai, India

This map, obtained from Pondicherry by Mr. G. W. Forrest, Officer in charge of the Records of the Government of India, appears to have been prepared to assist an intended invasion of the Island by the French.

The Museum’s collection of historical maps of Mumbai illustrate the city’s evolution from a group of seven islands into a vibrant urban centre in the 19th century. Changes in geography as a result of invasions, economic booms and planning are carefully chronicled.
