According to his biographer Ernest Jones, Freud averaged twenty cigars a day for most of his life. At various times he tried to give up smoking for short periods, and in the last ten years of his life he had to ration his intake, owing to his cancer and heart problems. In 1930 he even speaks of being down to one cigar a day.
