Between 1934 and 1938, Diego worked on the designs for the murals at the Palacio Nacional (National Palace) and the Hotel Reforma in his house-studio. He did much of his easel work there. One year before this photo was taken, Rivera negotiated the granting of political asylum to Leon Trotsky with President Lázaro Cárdenas.
