As an architect, Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff (1736-1800) was an important representative of early classicism in Germany. As a long-standing friend and advisor to Prince Franz, he was instrumental in the modernisation of the Principality of Anhalt-Dessau. According to his plans, Wörlitz Castle was the earliest classicist building on the European continent. He was also the creator of many other buildings in the Gartenreich.
