Bitter poverty and pogroms led to the emigration of Jewish inhabitants in the Russian Empire, especially after the Odessa pogroms in 1871. The assassination of the Russian Tsar Alexander II. (1818-1881) also resulted in discriminatory ordinances and violent pogrom waves against the Jewish population.
