  • About the series: Early Work: Late 1980s – 1990s: Towards the turn of the century, India was on the cusp of emerging from its relatively cocooned socio-economic structure and was headed straight into the abyss of globalization. The breaking of a cultural dam was inevitable; the flooding of an accustomed life by the unforeseen was imminent and anxiously anticipated. These photographs represent Prabuddha’s body of work during this select timeframe. He was pregnant with anticipation yet serenely comfortable in his skin. His pent-up energy transformed itself into generating an almost editorial representation of his understanding of beauty in these times. He cringed at being called a fashion photographer, as the stance of fashion in these images was almost secondary to his statement on the revelation of beauty.
  • About the Photographer: Prabuddha Dasgupta, 21 September 1956 – 12 August 2012, India, was a self-taught photographer who grew up in the cultural chaos of post-colonial India. In 1996 his controversial collection of portraits and nudes of urban Indian women titled Women was published. Prabuddha's work has been exhibited and published both in India and around the world and has received several awards. His last personal show titled Longing was held in New York in 2007.
