Fu Sheng is lecturing on Shang shu, the most basic Confucian text of politics and philosophy, which he had saved from the Great Qin book-burning. Chao Cu, who was sent by the Han dynasty emperor Wendi, is normally depicted sitting in front listening to the lecture. The image of Fu Sheng continuing to teach even at a weary old age of over ninety is, indeed, noble. Fu Sheng has been revered as a great patron of scholarship for many centuries.
