  • Description: Fugitive from a Mayan Lintel dates from Aburlarch period of Surrealist experimentation. The organic, abstract form floats against a vague background, reminiscent of similar images by the Chilean Surrealist Roberto Matta. Fugitive from a Mayan Lintel responds to the Abstract Expressionist interest in line as a signifier of spontaneous expression, capable of releasing the creative energy of the subconscious, but the work also evokes the pictographic reliefs of Mayan architecture. Abularach intended to convey ambiguity in the pictographic shapes of Fugitive from a Mayan Lintel reminiscent of Mayan writing yet suggestive of archetypal forms. -Text by Francesca Giani
