Fuji no Uraba (Shoots of wisteria leaves), from The Tale of Genji

Tosa SchoolEarly 17th century (Momoyama period)

Sakai City Museum
Sakai-shi, Osaka, Japan

Scene from Fuji no Uraba, Chapter 33 in The Tale of Genji: Hikaru Genji’s son Yugiri is invited to the party of wisteria flowers organized by To-no Chujo, when he is granted permission to marry To-no Chujo’s daughter Kumoi no Kari.
On the reverse side, there is an indistinct impression of a double-circled black seal. The radius of it is slightly smaller than that of Mitsuyoshi’s seal “Tosa Kyuyoku”. Though the painter of this work is loyal to the style of Mitsuyoshi, he seems to have a manner to depict the tail of the hat shorter, which ends at around the ears. Probably this work was created by a major painter at Mitsuyoshi’s workshop.
