Funerary jar (fragment)

Asian Art Museum

San Francisco, United States

In the south, Guangdong kilns sometimes produced exotic wares, such as vast funerary jars topped by a sculpted immortal world, like this piece. The Buddha seated inside the temple is attended by two figures holding cymbals, and a five-storied pagoda on each side of the door. Below are two guards, one on each side, and a lion running in the center. Jars of this type, assembled from pre-molded segments, were found in Tang tombs containing grain or bone ash (CGK Zenshu 1982 vol. 26: pl. 14).
