This is a copper funerary mask that represents the face of the Moche mythological hero Ai Apaec. The masks are important elements of the funerary paraphernalia of the leaders of ancient Peru. Masks help to build up the identity of the deceased in the other world. The masks were usually decorated with inlaid shells or painted with cinnabar, a red pigment (mercury sulfide). (UH)

Esta es una máscara funeraria Mochica de cobre representando al héroe mitológico Ai Apaec. Las máscaras funerarias son parte importante del entierro de los líderes de las sociedades del antiguo Perú. Las máscaras son símbolos importantes de la identidad del difunto, quien se transformaría en el personaje representado. Las máscaras eran frecuentemente decoradas con incrustaciones de conchas o pintadas con un pigmento rojo de cinabrio (sulfuro de mercurio). (UH)
