This portrait marked d’Andrade’s thirtieth year on the stag. It shows the moment in the graveyard when Don Giovanni invites the statue of the Commendatore to supper. Ten years previously, Slevogt had painted a “White d’Andrade,” which had received immediate acclaim. Where portrait and character role had become one in the earlier work, the “Red d’Andrade” depicts a whole scene where the generous rhythm of the picture planes and the expressive use of colour lend the subject a somewhat disembodied, floating quality.

  • Artist biography: Max Slevogt was a German Impressionist painter and illustrator, famous for his landscapes. He studied at the Munich Academy from 1885–89 and subsequently travelled to Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian. In 1900 he returned to the city and was represented in the German pavilion at the World Exhibition with the work Scheherazade. Paintings of Édouard Manet impressed him deeply. One year later he joined the Berlin Secession. During World War I he was the official painter on the western front. He went on to become a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. In 1924 he worked for the Dresden state opera, designing scenery for the performance of Don Giovanni by Mozart. Slevogt best known artworks include 'Straße bei Godramstein' (1909).
