Many of the black-and-white photos taken by Country Life photographers of the Hestercombe Formal Garden in 1908 were not published. Nonetheless, together with the twenty-seven crisp images that did appear in ‘Hestercombe I’ (10 Oct) and ‘Hestercombe II’ (17 Oct), they have proved invaluable in helping to inform the continuing restoration of the Formal Garden. Case in point is the Pergola, for which nine close up views were consulted by horticulturists in 2005, resulting in the positive identification of the climbers initially associated with 13 of the Pergola’s 40 piers.
