The Battle of the Nile

Philip James de Loutherbourg1800

Tate Britain

Tate Britain
London, United Kingdom

This painting represents what was taken for granted as a British victory in the Battle of the Nile in 1798. The battle was fought at night in Abu Qir Bay, near Alexandria. Nelson found the French fleet at anchor and attacked. The climax of the battle came at ten in the evening when the French flagship exploded, the moment shown here. The victory secured British control of the Mediterranean.
