Cevdet Erek’s rhythm and measure-based works and site-specific installations explore the units, structures and forms that shape our perception of space and time. The artist experiments with rhythms as sounds in a space by rendering them accessible through objects, visual images, or a graphic language. In addition to his own compositions, Erek also utilises digital archives and recordings made by himself.
Cevdet Erek’s "Shore Scene Soundtrack – SSS" is a performative sound piece that focuses on the correlations between technology, imitation, representation and performance. The video shows a recording session in which the artist performs sounds that imitate waves crashing on a beach by stroking a carpet. The same carpet, which initially appears as a monochromatic painting hung on the wall of the gallery space at Arter, invites viewers to perform their own shore soundtracks by running their hands across its surface. In 2012, Cevdet Erek received the Nam June Paik Award for this multi-layered work that integrates auditory, tactile and visual experiences.
