The scroll reads: "What reason moved Hercules, who ruled over Italy and Spain, to prohibit the navigation beyond the strait of Gibraltar, it is unknown. The valiant and very cautious man considered it was wise to forbid the commerce between our people and these people... But the wish for honour, together with the desire of conquest, led the Portoguese and others to go there and disturb the peace of these people. This in turn led the Ethiopian to try to obtain supremacy over these lands and get rid of the Portoguese, wishing to keep these people in their usual peace." Photo: Rabatti&Domingie
