Son of Ustad Nehal Khan, and accepted as a shishya by Ustad Haji Khan, he had the great opportunity of studying from learned musicians at his own home. His uncle, Saddiq Khan, introduced the Khartal to their community's repertoire and taught Gafur as well. True to his roots, Gafur Khan has presented his music all over India and in various parts of Europe and Asia.

  • About the craft: Manganiyars are hereditary communities of traditional folk musicians living mostly in the Barmer and Jaisalmer districts of western Rajasthan. Their music has survived decades owing to the Jajmani system which is fundamental to their art form and also a source of livelihood. The repertoire of Manganiyar music covers qawwali, sufi songs, bhajans and songs on life cycle, rituals, festivals. The community's identity instrument is the Kamaicha.
