These tortoises are only found on the Galapagos archipelago, a remote group of islands off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean. Depending on their eating habits, the populations there have developed different types of shell shape. Of the 15 sub-species of giant tortoise native to the Galapagos Islands, five have become extinct in recent history.
