July 20, 1969—American astronauts first landed on the moon, fulfilling a centuries-long quest since man first gazed skyward. Not surprisingly, a surge of “Out of this World” fashions by such designers as André Courrèges (1923-2016), Pierre Cardin (b. 1922), and Paco Rabanne (b. 1934) blasted off the catwalks. Two months after the famous landing, the Los Angeles Times reported on this trendy silver jumpsuit designed by Paris-based Ruben Torres (b. 1931): “The man in the space suit this fall need not be an astronaut; he just might be your banker or your broker…”
