One of the earliest comic characters, named "Ally Sloper," premiered in 1867 in the British magazine "Judy." The comic proved popular but eventually fell out of fashion. The name remained, however, and Milton Bradley used it to title a target game around the turn of the 20th century in the United States. The clown image adorning the target does not resemble the official comic character, but perhaps Bradley hoped to capitalize on a once-funny name.
