Game:Chainmail Rules for Medieval Miniatures

The history of Dungeons & Dragons essentially begins with the medieval miniatures wargame Chainmail. Gary Gygax and friend Jeff Perrin (who owned a hobby store in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin) developed Chainmail together. It was based loosely on the model of a game called Siege at Bodenburg, published in "Strategy & Tactics" magazine in 1967. Perrin developed his own rules for miniature warfare and Gygax expanded on these and wrote them down. Published first by Guidon Games in 1971, Chainmail became popular. TSR Inc. acquired the rights to Chainmail in 1975, one year after the firm's successful publication, based on many of the rules from Chainmail, of Dungeons & Dragons. TSR's 3rd Edition of Chainmail, published until 1979, is the most common example.
