In 1889, toymaker Charles Crandall scored a huge hit with "Pigs in Clover," called the first dexterity puzzle to become a runaway best-seller.Crandall introduced the game early that year and at one point produced 8000 units a day. Stim & Lyon, a little-known rival toymaker, introduced its "Cows in the Corn" dexterity puzzle sometime after Crandall's success. The Cow puzzle worked on a similar principle: tip the puzzle to work marbles through a maze to the center. Rival manufacturers produce similar knock-off toys and games today, as well.
