Ruth Elliott Johnson Clarke and Eric G. Clarke, husband and wife, were the inventors of the word game Dictionary, Please! Appearing around the same time as the classic game Scrabble, this game does not employ a board. Words are still formed with wooden tiles and a complex scoring method is utilized. The Clarkes were both held in a World War II Japanese prisoner of war camp. Perhaps they developed the word game there to help pass the time. Dictionary, Please! comes complete with pencils and a small-sized dictionary, to settle spelling disputes.
