The game known universally as Hex was invented in 1942 by the Danish mathematician Piet Hein. He published the game weekly in a Danish newspaper, presenting his readers with a new problem each time. The game was also invented independently by the famous American mathematician John Nash, at Princeton in 1947. In 1952 Parker Brothers introduced a version of Nash's game under the name Hex, which has stuck with different versions ever since. 3M Games introduced a pencil and paper version for travel, in 1974.
