Sometimes toys are important because of their notoriety. The Jarts lawn darts game may be one of the most unsafe games ever. But many families owned them in the late 1970s. Although there is no warning of any kind on the package, by 1988 the Consumer Products Safety division successfully banned their manufacture, sale, and resale in the United States. Four deaths were attributed to the toy but they caused many hundreds more injuries. Their notoriety makes them instantly recognizeable and helps raise the important issue of toy safety. Today, safer rubber-tipped lawn darts are available.
