Judges Guild was one of the other early publishers of role-playing game materials, after TSR, the first and most initially successful of the early publishers, which published Dungeons & Dragons. Founded in 1976, Judges Guild sought permission from then-fledgling TSR to publish supplemental material, in the form of adventure modules, maps, and other material. Dave Arneson, one of the founders of TSR, initially gave Judges Guild a verbal agreement to publish this material, but the firms eventually tightened up this arrangement. Judges Guild was slow to modernize during the early 1980s, remaining committed to earlier dungeon fantasy games without the increasing realism that other makers then offered. The City State of Tarantis, an adventure module published in 1983, was the last successful publishing attempt by Judges Guild, until the firm re-established itself in 1999. This particular copy of Tarantis came from the collections of Dave Arneson and it is thought that he himself colored in the fanciful designs seen on the front and back covers.
