Word games became very popular during the early part of the 20th century, with the invention of crossword puzzles (usually considered to be 1913) and Scrabble (1938). That same latter year saw the invention of Klix, called "the modern crossword game." Klix consists of seven dice marked with different letters on each side. Extensive instructions describe several crossword game variants, as well as a solitaire version.
