Nyarlathotep is a fictional character first created by fantasy author H.P. Lovecraft and mentioned in a poem of 1920. Lovecraft featured the character in later fiction and the role-playing game creators Chaosium brought Nyarlathotep into its Call of Cthulhu role-playing game series. The firm's Masks of Nyarlathotep is the one of the most popular titles among the early Call of Cthulhu games. The Call of Cthulhu (CofC) series is noted for its "onion skin" layering of ever-increasingly complicated terror scenarios, different from the comparatively aimless wandering typical of other common early role-playing games. In CofC games, players are just as likely to be killed off or go insane during the play; not all the endings are happy.
