The lawn game croquet evolved in Europe, especially England, from late medieval lawn billiards games. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the game still enjoyed some popularity in the United States as well as Europe. Several toy manufacturers made miniature croquet sets for indoor use, either on tables or carpets. A Vermont manufacturer, Newton & Thompson, is not recognized for any toys other than small croquet sets.
