Milton Bradley, the man who founded the games company, achieved success after publishing his Checkered Game of Life in 1860. A smaller, war-time edition became a favorite of Civil War soldiers. Though his firm continued to publish games, Bradley himself became more concerned with childhood and education. Following the teachings of Friedrich Wilhelm August Fr??bel, Bradley began publishing books on children's education and, eventually, developmental toys for children as well. A bowling game from the late 19th century not only duplicated a game of lawn bowls, it also helped develop a child's motor skills. The game features quality wood construction.
