Garden of the Marquis de la Vega Inclán

The Garden of the Marquis de la Vega Inclán, or “Retiro Garden”, was designed by José Gómez Millán between 1913 and 1917, when the Marquis de la Vega was the Royal Alcázar curator. José Gómez took the regular layout of the Jardin de las Damas as a model. A grid of squares, cut away at the corners, was laid out with walkways between them; in some sections these have water courses running along them, linking the fountains at the intersections. Urns on pedestals and tile-clad benches and balustrades completed the design, which has broad perspectives, thanks to the judicious placing of trees and shrubs. A pergola was also built above one of the water-wheels that once irrigated the Moorish vegetable gardens.
