Constable James O’Brien of the Dublin Metropolitan Police was unarmed. He was shot dead as he tried to close the gates to the Upper Yard of Dublin Castle. Constable O’Brien was the first fatality of the 1916 Rising. From Dublin and the “Sinn Féin” Rising, published by Wilson Hartnell & Co., 1916.
