A second-generation rattan weaver, Webber spent his childhood in Northern Africa, Spain, and the United States. Influenced by his mother’s own teachings and numerous forms of ethnic weaving from an early age, he often extends his artistic finesse in fibre by experimenting with other mediums.
A creative homage to Japanese weaving techniques, this series embraces traditional processes by recreating them anew. Webber applies the modern, Western idea of a handbag to a period statement on the onerous lifestyle of a Geisha. Each uniquely woven basket is a celebration of his materials, yet
by inserting granite objects into each piece and enveloping them in woven shrouds, he manages to retain their visually compelling nature while rendering them functionally obsolete.
