Chambered nautilus

The Nautilus is the only surviving cephalopod with a permanent shell. This relative of the squid can retract into this shell and close it externally with a hood-like cap. The nocturnal animal lives in the tropical Indo-Pacific, where it feeds on small crustaceans, fish and carrion.
