The engraving is one of the rare visual representations of the Council of Trento made while the synod was ongoing and with a clearly documentary purpose.
The need to capture the image of the council manifested late, during the final stages of the proceedings. It was chosen to use the printing technique to quickly and economically disseminate the picture of an event that was on everyone’s lips. At the same time, the engraving was a cheap and easily transported souvenir for the many participants of the Council.
The date and place of publication (Venice) are written in the lower right-hand corner. The effort to provide a faithful picture is highlighted by the presence of various explicative captions located next to the corresponding figures.
