The UNSC granted the United States the authority to establish a unified command and appoint its commander. General Douglas MacArthur was named the first commander of the UNC and was given permission to use the UN flag.

The photograph captures General MacArthur receiving the UN flag on July 14, 1950. On the left is General Joseph L. Collins, the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, and on the right is General MacArthur.
