Print from Harper's Weekly titled "General Grant Receiving his Commission as Lieutenant-General from President Lincoln," March 26, 1864. President Abraham Lincoln signed the document which promoted Ulysses S. Grant to lieutenant general of the United States Army on March 10, 1864. This put Grant in charge of the entire Union army for the remained of the Civil War.
