The end of the war did not mean victory for the majority of the Polish Underground. Although Poland was freed from the German occupation by the Red Army, Stalin imposed a puppet communist government in the country. In spring of 1945, the NKVD arrested 16 leaders of the Polish Underground State, including the last commander of the Home Army, Leopold Okulicki and the Government Delegate at Home, Jan Stanisław Jankowski. They were both killed in Soviet prisons.
