Generation six

A central concern that runs through Costas Coulentianos’ work is the investigation of the relationship of matter and volume with light and space and the artist's effort is found in removing the raw weight of the iron material in order to give it an alternative movement.
After a period in the mid-1980s, when Coulentianos was working on small-scale sculptures, he moved on in 1988 to the execution of monumental sculptures and created the series "Generation Three", "Generation Four" and then the section "Generation Six", which includes the two works from the collection of the MOMus Museum of Contemporary Art "Athens is sleeping / Generation Six No. III" and "Generation Six".
These monumental sculptures, through their imposing compositions, testify to the sculptor's painstaking construction skills, where movement is a key element of their organic structure, with the "screws" he uses to join the joints of the metal defining their directions. The majority of the works in this section were presented in 1992 at the Yeni Mosque in Thessaloniki, as a result of the synergy between the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Ileana Tounta Centre for Contemporary Art, with these massive sculptures dominating the space with their simple and austere lines.
