One of the most original and insightful interpreters within the international panorama, Mimmo Jodice has been present throughout various periods in Italian photography with a consistently critical approach: from experiments with the language of photography in the 1970s, to social and anthropological issues, to the urban and architectural landscape of the 1980s. Jodice was invited to participate in "atlante italiano 003" with a series of photographs of the port of Genoa. His work is presented in the form of narrative sequences recounting the highway that crosses the city like a spine, running parallel to the sea. The photographs place the viewer in a rapidly moving sequence of images of the city, the port and the sea, captured in fleeting and indefinite fragments. Their being “out of focus” amplifies the sense of speed, making it even more difficult to decipher the elements of a highly decomposed landscape. Jodice’s expressive use of black & white transposes this evocative and meditated vision onto a plane of oneiric experience.
