This portrait, painted by Sorolla when he was only nineteen years old, shows the artist's mastery in capturing the psychology of the sitter, but also in depicting the textures of the fabrics of the clothing of the period, as well as the use of the colour black. Furthermore, this canvas is related to the work of Francisco Domingo Marqués, a point of reference for the young painters of the time. As a curiosity, this painting was recently acquired by the Ministry of Culture and Sport from a private collection, and thanks to a photograph, we now know that it was shown in one of the main galleries of the Valencia Regional Exhibition of 1883.
