Blaeu’s Atlas Maior is one of the biggest and most remarkable Dutch atlases of the world. It represents the state of geographical knowledge of the world in the mid-17th century. The Atlas Maior was considered the most expensive book that could be acquired at that time, it was often purchased by the wealthiest merchants who boasted of possessing such a unique item. The title page of the first volume dates from a 1665 reprint. Blaeu’s Atlas Maior was subsequently published in French, Dutch, German and Hungarian.

  • About the author: Joan Blaeu (born 23 September 1596, died 28 May 1673) was a Dutch cartographer. Joan Blaeu was the son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1620, he became a doctor of law. Then, he started working for his father. In 1649, Blaeu published a collection of Dutch city maps entitled Tooneel der Steden. In 1654, he published the first atlas of Scotland. Joan Blaeu died in Amsterdam. His Atlas Maior, comprising 594 maps, published in 1662, was considered the most expensive atlas in the 17th century.
