Robert 'Bob' John Tingey was a renowned Antarctic geologist, and was instrumental in creating the first geological map of the continent. Bob started work with the Bureau of Mineral Resources - Geoscience Australia's precursor organisation - in 1966, and first travelled to Antarctica in 1969, as part of the bureau's Antarctic mapping program. Bob returned to Antarctica many times, and was the instigator of the first comprehensive volume detailing Antarctic's geological histroy.
