George Jackson, the author of Soledad Brother, was field marshal of the Black Panther Party and tasked with recruiting prisoners to the organization. In August 1971, he was killed by San Quentin guards after he led a takeover of the solitary confinement unit. His funeral in Oakland drew a massive crowd
