Born in England, actor George K. Fortescue made his U.S. debut in Boston at age 16. His most famous role was Catherine in Rice’s “Evangeline,” a part Fortescue performed for 20 consecutive years. In this photo, the camera draws attention to his elaborate coiffure: studded with birds and flowers, it epitomized the excesses of Victorian hairdressers.
