This sepia photo portrait of George Perkins Marsh was produced by the Victorian studio photographers Pach Brothers in New York City, after an oil portrait of Marsh painted about 1845 by G.P.A. Healy.

The Pach portrait photo was widely known and reproduced in Marsh’s lifetime. This photo print mounted on a “cabinet card” was a gift to Frederick Billings from Marsh’s widow, Caroline Crane Marsh, in 1882. It is preserved in the Billings Family Archives. The Healy oil portrait is now in the collection of the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College.
