George Washington

R. Williams Birch was responsible for the introduction of enamel paint in the United States in the late eighteenth century. This portrait of George Washington, which he painted more than fifty portraits, inspired by the painting by Gilbert Charles Stuart in 1795 (Metropolitan Museum).
