This black and white photograph shows George Washington Custis [known as Custis] Lee, the first son of Robert and Mary Lee shortly after the end of the Civil War.In mid-summer 1865, the family moved into a cottage outside of Richmond and lived there until Robert E. Lee accepted the position of president of Washington College. The Lees moved to Lexington, VA where Custis became a mathematics professor at the neighboring Virginia Military Institute. He held that position until his father’s death in 1870 when he became president of the college, renamed Washington & Lee University.
