Print of George Washington based on the original portrait by Charles Wilson Peale. This painting, the first known portrait of George Washington, was completed in 1772 and shows him in the uniform of a colonel in the Virginia militia. George Washington Parke Custis hung the original Peale portrait in a place of prominence in the Center Hall of Arlington House. At events and engagements held in Washington’s memory, Mr. Custis would erect Washington’s Revolutionary War tent and within, display the memorabilia in his possession, including the Peale portrait.
