Register states that this device was used by German sailors aboard destroyer V125 to shoot seagulls during their internment. No fresh meat was delivered to the High Seas Fleet while interned at Scapa Flow, so the sailors fitted snares to their ships and used devices like this to catch gulls. Evidently used in conjunction with some sort of quarrel - possibly attached to a line which enabled the bird to be hauled aboard.
